Imagine multiple Petabytes of data on a single optical disc, that may be a reality.

Imagine a disc that could hold a million times more content than a standard DVD? That’s right, a single disc that can hold Petabytes of data. It’s not as farfetched as you may think. Researchers in London, with the help of Russian scientist are working on a new way to increase the capacity of an optical disc to unheard of levels by using organic dyes based on azobenzene, and a special light antenna. I won't go into the full science of how this works, so if you'd like to know more, you can read the original article, New Data Storage Method Could Boost Capacity Of Optical Storage Media. The key is that we have only scratched the surface of the possibilities of storage and optical media.

When you can keep all of Facebook’s digital records, which are stored on acres of server farms in multiple locations, onto a single optical disc, or at most a handful of discs, that is incredible to even fathom. It’s details like this that make me more convinced than ever that optical discs will remain the key method of digital storage for centuries to come. Hard drives and flash memory will never equal the stability, reliability, and security that optical discs can provide. So if there is no limitation on capacity, then optical discs are clearly the best choice for any archival storage or large capacity content.
